Once you have made the decision that it is time to remodel, a remodeling company must be chosen. This is a very important decision, as the success of the remodel depends almost entirely on the people who are entrusted with the job. These people will be working in your house, and when they leave you will have to live with the changes they have created. However, there is no reason for worry, as great remodeling companies are easy to spot. The following are guidelines on how to choose a remodeling company.

Ask Around

Your best resources will be your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. Ask around and see if anyone you know can recommend a remodeling company. Chances are, you know at least a few people that have remodeled, and many of them will be happy to share their stories. If someone you know had a bad experience, be sure to stay away from that remodeler. On the other hand, remodelers who are highly praised can go on your short list.

Check Online Reviews

Now that you have a list of remodelers recommended by your friends, take your search online. Before you start googling, remember that online reviews are not always reliable. However, if you find that a company your friend recommended has consistently low ratings, it’s possible they may have changed the way they do things since your friend used them.  Read recent reviews closely, if it seems like reviewers are getting a discount in exchange for a positive yelp review, run away. This is a huge red flag that the company can’t get good reviews on its own, and had to pay for them.

Interview Around

Once you have narrowed your friends’ recommendations down to a few companies, it’s time to meet the contestants. Schedule meetings with at least three companies. Some companies will offer to come out to your house and measure the area you want remodeled, then  present you with a plan for exactly how they plan to remodel your space. Before you see this plan and the budget, you don’t’ want to be married to any one company, so don’t commit to anything and don’t pay for anything. See what they each have to offer and decide from there.

Know Your Budget and What you Want

Before you go into any meeting, be sure to know what you want and how much you want to pay for it. You will want to decide whether your concept or your budget is more important to you. It is possible that none of the remodeling companies you meet with will be able to pull off your design concept for your budgeted price. Know if you are willing to pay more, or compromise
your vision.

Expect a Wait

In your initial meetings with potential remodelers, get as specific with your questions as possible. You may feel that some of your concerns are odd (How long will it take? Will my house be dusty? Will you use my bathroom?) but experienced remodelers are guaranteed to have heard it all before. An important question to ask is when the project will start. A good company will be booked for a while, so it’s a red flag if they say they can start as soon as the parts come in. A busy remodeling company means that past customers are returning, and that others have recommended them to their friends. Waiting a few months for a quality remodel will pay off, you’ll get a remodel you can enjoy for years to come.
